Building bridges is a program that helps children understand others with disabilties. It is a great program for all kids and their are fun hands-on activities. A lot of parents participate too. Kids also like these activities because they learn to step into the shoes of the kids who have disabilities.
This program helps students better understand and appreciate people of all abilities. Dyslexia and ADHD was discussed with the fifth graders. One activity they participated in was writing on one side of a sheet of paper with your dominant hand and then switching and writing on the other side of the paper with your non-dominant hand. The students would see the difference between them and how this could impact lives of the people who have disabilities, this teaches the children that sometimes it’s not as easy to write with your left hand as you think it is. This is why people have to be mindful of kids or adults that have disabilities. One activity that fourth graders and fifth graders also do is taping their fingers together and trying to pick items up.
Maddie a student at Colonial said, “Building Bridges is a great opportunity for kids to learn about kids with special needs.” We can continue this connection in our school and community.
